On the series of walking tours you will find out what happened to the famous Ford City, and why.
Welcome to Ford City Walking Tours with Herb Colling, author of five local history books, and former announcer-reporter with CBC Radio in Windsor. Ford City was once one of six border communities that amalgamated with Windsor in the mid 1930's. Established in the first decade of the last century to accommodate workers with the newly found Ford Motor Company, Ford City flourished, and enjoyed meteoric, almost unprecedented growth for half a century. Then, the decline set in, and Ford City became a shadow of its former self. On this series of walking tours find out what happened, and why. One tour will help determine what Glengarda, a school run by nuns, has in common with Jesuit pear trees, Coventry Gardens, the Peace Fountain, and Jovial Joe Reaume. Another explores the Polish connection during World War Two, visits the site of several Riverside Drive mansions, and looks at how St.Joseph's Convent was saved from the wrecking ball. Another tour looks at the riot at Holy Rosary Church, as well as other churches along Drouillard Road, which demonstrate the racial diversity of the area. Yet another, looks at the murals painted to attract tourists to the region, and why the effort has had mixed results. These 90 minute tours cost $20.00 per person (minimum two people), and can be booked at any time seven days a week. For specific dates / times, please send a message.
