A Hand Up is a 501c3 that was created to assist residents in the Metro Detroit area that have experienced trauma.
The Metro Detroit area has numerous individuals and families that have experienced some form of trauma and unfortunately many of these individuals don’t receive the necessary assistance to cope in a healthy and appropriate manner. Traumatic events can cause various types of dysfunction in an individual’s or family’s life; traumatic events can cause mental disorders (PTSD, anxiety, phobias, etc.), the inability to concentrate or think clearly can interfere with daily tasks (i.e. school, employment). Trauma disorder can cost the United States of America billions of dollars. Trauma is a harmful and costly problem that society has to deal with. Trauma is the result of violence, abuse, neglect, loss, disaster, war, and/or other emotionally harmful experiences. Trauma has no boundaries with regard to age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, geography or sexual orientation. A Hand Up Community Action Agency was developed to provide assistance to families that have suffered from trauma. Traumatic experiences shake the foundations of our beliefs. A Hand Up addresses the impact of trauma on individuals, families, and communities. A Hand Up wants to help individuals and families reduce negative emotional and behavioral responses that follow abuse, domestic violence, traumatic events or traumatic loss so that they can live productive lives. A Hand Up wants to empower these people and help them rebuild their lives.
