We are Northeast Florida's only nonprofit focused on the permanent solution to homelessness.
Ability Housing opened its doors in 1992 as a group home for six adults with development disabilities. Known then as Grove House of Jacksonville, the nonprofit saw a tremendous need for quality affordable housing and began to expand its efforts focusing on the needs of adults with disabilities. In 2004, Ability Housing was approached by the local homeless coalition and several of its members and asked to expand its mission to create permanent housing solutions for homeless families and individuals. Today, Ability Housing is the only nonprofit in Northeast Florida that focuses on the development and operation of quality affordable rental housing for individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness and adults with a disability. Ability Housing: *Stabilizes and revitalizes neighborhoods effected by detrimental rental properties; reducing crime and blight *Improves the quality of life of the resident, the neighborhood and the broader community *Preserves existing affordable housing *Improves neighborhood property values *Provides housing affordable to the community’s most vulnerable households *Provides a permanent solution to the community’s homeless issue All Ability Housing residents are low-income, earning 80% or less of the area median income (AMI). Most are very low-income, earning 50% or less of the AMI; and extremely low-income, earning 30% or less of AMI. Currently the average annual income of Ability Housing’s residents is $8,800.
