The AMEK is the Dutch leading authority on historical fencing and fighting arts.
The AMEK was founded in 2002 by Mishaël A. Lopes Cardozo. He is a member of the HEMAC (Historical European Martial Arts Coalition) an international coalition of experts, practitioners and researchers dedicated to the resurrection and reconstruction of ancient fighting styles as well as one of the founding members of the HEFFAC (the Historical European Fighting & Fencing Arts Coalition), an organisation of schools in the Lowlands created to stimulate, educate and promote our European martial heritage. At the AMEK we practice the fighting arts of the European middle ages. The different fighting disciplines at the academy are: wrestling, longsword, dagger, sword/buckler, poleweapons and messer. The AMEK's work and training schedules are exclusively based on the contents of original historical fencing manuals, dating back to the 13th century. Historical European martial arts are about mental and physical exercise, historical research, creative expression, relaxation and self-defence. The different disciplines of this ancient martial art provide together one of the most elaberate and complete fighting systems today. The sport demands fast eyes, fast reflexes, good judgement of distances, the right timing and technique. The AMEK has about 150 students and five locations throughout the Netherlands.
