Access:health provides access to health education, technical skills and job opportunities. In Africa girls miss up to 50 days of school or work each year because of their periods. The root of the problem is lack of education and many girls feel ashamed to talk about their bodies. Girls are using leaves, newspaper and even cow-dung as alternatives to safe, secure sanitary wear. The founder of access: co-created the 'Mwezi sanitary towel' with local communities. This product can be made and sold by anyone, anywhere, using the plentiful resources available across all African markets In our half day training we share this design along with sexual and reproductive health training. We provide a unique opportunity for questions and challenge damaging ideas, practices and superstitions. We aim to be locally accessible, environmentally friendly and economical.
Project Mwezi target vulnerable girls in schools. Through our training we hope to keep girls in school, giving them choice, keeping them healthy and essentially giving them a brighter future. It is most effective to train community leaders who then take the training into their communities. In phase I training, the founder reached over 200 individuals. These individuals are now trainers for access:health and have taken the skills across Kenya and into two more countries: Uganda and Tanzania. We are now an East African based organisation with a fast growing community of women sharing knowledge and encouragement. Project Mwezi (Kiswahili for ‘moon’) designed a reusable sanitary towel
