The Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance was formed to increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting and finance. The Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance, or AFWA, (formerly the American Society of Women Accountants) is the home for all women accounting professionals whether new to the field, experienced or considering a career transition. The mission of AFWA is to enable women in all accounting and related fields to achieve their full personal, professional and economic potential and to contribute to the future development of their profession. AFWA is a national association with one Nebraska chapter, based on Omaha. Our chapter offers leadership, networking and educational opportunities. Participating in chapter meetings, seminars, and regional and national conferences allow members to maximize the value of their AFWA membership.
The objectives of the Omaha Chapter include: •To develop technical, leadership, and management skills and to provide training in career planning and goal setting. •To promote active participation in developing, implementing, and maintain accounting standards that serve the profession, the business community, and the general public. •To educate accounting professionals in the value of addressing quality-of-life issues. •To cooperate with other accounting and business organizations in joint projects which support the mission of the alliance. •To ensure the continuation of AFWA as a strong and viable organization supporting members in achieving successful careers. A little bit about the Omaha Chapter: •We are comprised of accountants who are employed in private industry, the government sector, education and public accounting. Our membership covers management trainees to upper management, students to instructors, and staff assistants to partners. •We meet monthly, offering a variety of meeting programs including featured speakers, social activities, and CPE opportunities. •We provide a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and network with professionals having similar business and personal interests. •We host annual educational seminars to provide qualified continuing professional education and personal growth opportunities. •We hold a Public Relations Dinner each Spring to inform the business community of our activities during the year. •We award annual scholarships to college students majoring in accounting. •We publish a monthly bulletin that announces meetings, reports local chapter activities, and provide an opportunity for members to report on current issues of interest. •We maintain a website to provide current information to local chapter members. •We received our official charter in November 1976 from the American Society of Women Accountants.
