Description

After-School All-Stars grew out of Inner-City Games, an initiative founded in Los Angeles in 1991 to positively influence and inspire at-risk children and youth. In 1992, Arnold Schwarzenegger founded the Inner-City Games Foundation to expand the program nationwide. At that time, San Diego was named as one of the cities that would benefit from having an Inner- City Games program. The name was changed to After-School All-Stars in July 2003. After-School All-Stars of Greater San Diego is the local licensee of the national After-School All-Stars, whose honorary chairs are California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. The mission of After-School All-Stars is to provide comprehensive out-of-school programs that keep children safe and help them achieve in school and in life. After-School All-Stars programs provide supportive relationships with adult leaders with sports and recreation, educational programs, technology training, arts and culture, life skills and service learning to engage middle-school kids—a winning combination that increases confidence and encourages success. After-School All-Stars: •Provides out-of-school programs that are fun for kids, keeps them safe and helps them achieve success in school and life. •Improves kids’ lives by nurturing their minds, bodies and spirits through programs that incorporate independent learning, academics and enrichment activities. •• Serves 70,000 youth annually through after school and summer programs in 13 cities across the country. After-School All-Stars currently has programs in 13 U.S. cities: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Las Vegas, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Chicago, Columbus, Atlanta, Orlando, South Florida, and New York. An additional chapter will be opening in Honolulu, HI in the fall of 2009.
