General Info
The Alaska State Troopers were originally organized in 1941 as the Alaska Highway Patrol. In 1953, the territorial legislature created the Alaska Territorial Police and gave it broad powers over all criminal matters as well as the very important task of traffic control. With the advent of statehood in 1959, the designation was changed to Alaska State Police, a division of the Department of Public Safety. The name of the organization was changed to the Alaska State Troopers in 1967.
The Alaska State Troopers face law enforcement challenges not encountered by other law enforcement agencies in the United States. One-third the size of the continental United States, Alaska consists of 586,000 square miles of diverse territory that experiences extreme weather conditions. State Troopers cope with blizzards, hundreds of inches of snowfall, avalanches, winds in excess of 100 miles per hour, sub-zero temperatures and heavy rainfall. Alaska is filled with rugged mountains, massive glaciers, tundra, forests, has more than three million lakes and a coastline stretching 33,000 miles. The vast expanse of the state, combined with the terrain and weather, create a significant challenge for troopers responding to incidents.
The assigned duties of the Alaska State Troopers are numerous and enormous. AST is required to investigate crimes, provide traffic law enforcement and safety on Alaska’s road system, provide prisoner transport and security to the Alaska Court System, conduct and coordinate search and rescues, provide a presence for the prevention of public disorder, provide reassurance and assistance to any person, and provide regulatory and administrative oversight to a myriad of public business transactions. The employees of AST, both commissioned and civilian, are proud and privileged to shoulder those duties on behalf of Alaskans.
