Description

When you are having those discussions about what’s wrong with City Hall, Brian Hopkins is that neighbor you turn to and say, “You know what, YOU should run for Alderman!” Brian has always been the quiet guy who worked hard to make things better. Hopkins proudly points to one dust-up with police when he was arrested as a young college student at Moraine Valley Community College for campaigning – against the then-mayor’s wishes – for more funding for the college. But in the twenty years since those campaigning charges were dropped, Hopkins has been making every place he’s landed measurably better. After graduating from the University of Illinois-Springfield, Hopkins served as an Intern for the Illinois State Senate, assigned to the Appropriations Committee. For someone who would later help advise President Bill Clinton’s transition team on a better way to address the national issue of homelessness, it was the perfect training ground on how public servants could work to better people’s lives. Brian went on to be the Field Director for the Illinois Coalition to end Homelessness, and led the successful campaign to pass the Illinois Homeless Voting Rights Act, the first of its kind in the nation. He also directed the Midwest tour of “Address Unknown” a nationally known theater company of homeless actors. Known for his consensus building and creative, outside the box thinking that frequently leads to measurable social and policy changes, Brian Hopkins is running for public office for the first time. Brian chose 2nd Ward Alderman because he believes local offices have the biggest impact on the quality of lives for Chicago families and businesses. “If you want to make Chicago an even better place to live, work and raise our families,” Hopkins asserts “simply look at who’s making those decisions in local office. That’s the front line.” Brian has served on the Board of Directors of the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR) since 1999. He is currently the senior board member, after serving as Treasurer, Vice President, and President. He also co-chaired the first neighborhood music festival in SOAR’s history, StreeterFest; the kind of neighborhood event that volunteers know will test the most dedicated consensus builder’s values and organizational skills. As a leader in SOAR, Brian has fought to protect the community from health risks associated with environmental contamination at former industrial sites. He has advocated for open space and park land, and served on the committee to design the proposed DuSable Park, planned for a site near Navy Pier. He currently serves on the Lakeshore Planning Committee, a group of civic leaders advocating a bold plan to add more green space and parkland to Chicago’s Lakefront. Brian has been active in transportation issues, and served on the Audit Committee for the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation (now the Active Transportation Alliance). He previously served on the Board of Working Bikes; an organization that recycles used and unwanted bikes. When he’s not working on local policy issues, Brian can sometimes be found cycling or playing hockey in a national amateur league. Most often, however, he and his wife, Colleen, can be found enjoying the numerous dining, cultural and entertainment options in the vibrant neighborhoods of Chicago’s 2nd Ward.

In August of 2012 I set out to explore running for 9th Ward Alderman in the 2015 Chicago Municipal Election. My family and friends were very excited and supportive. I spent the last two years going door-to-door talking to different members of the community and meeting with several of business owners on ways to grow businesses within the 9th Ward. Over the past few weeks, I have been in talks with the current 9th Ward Alderman, Anthony Beale. He shared with me the vision he has for the Ward, the things he was in the process of doing, and what he has accomplished against all odd in his last 15 years in office. What I realized after each conversation is that he and I had the same vision and passion for the 9th Ward. From bringing jobs and improving education, to public safety and community redevelopment. It is my belief that it would serve the Ward more effectively if I worked with the Alderman rather than against him. Alderman Beale brings to the job many years of experience and leadership that voters will appreciate. As of today, August 29, 2014, I am withdrawing from the race to become 9th Ward Alderman. I will be putting my full support behind 9th Ward Alderman Anthony A. Beale and ask that you join me and do the same. I would like to personally thank you all who have supported me from day one. Words cannot express my gratitude. Sincerely yours, Michael Ovitz
