Description

Have you recently suffered and injury to your lower limb? Have you been dealing with pain for a long time? A consultation with a chiropodist may help! What is Chiropody? Chiropody is a medical practice, literally meaning “hand on foot”, or “the manual treatment of foot conditions”. Chiropodists are registered foot and ankle specialists that assess and treat foot conditions, disorders or pathologies. “The practice of Chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases or disorders of the foot by therapeutic, surgical, orthotic and palliative means. Chiropody is practiced by qualified, regulated practitioners who have undergone government established and recognized programs and examinations. Only those who are registered by the Ontario College Of Chiropodist are licensed to practice as Chiropodists or Podiatrists.” What is the difference between chiropody and podiatry? Chiropody is the British school of thought when it comes to podiatric medicine. Chiropody has a focus on conservative interventions, “If we can solve a problem simply, then that is the preferred method”. Chiropodists are registered in Ontario and chiropodists are authorized to conduct soft-tissue surgery, administer substances by injection, prescribe medications, and prescribe and build orthotics. Podiatry is the American school of thought when it comes to podiatric medicine. Podiatry has a focus on surgical interventions. There are very few podiatrists registered in Ontario due to legislation enacted by the Ontario government in 1993. In addition to the authorized acts that chiropodists have, podiatrists in Ontario can also conduct bone surgery. What qualifications do Chiropodists have? Chiropodists and Podiatrists have at least 7-8 years of post secondary schooling before they can enter medical practice. A bachelor of Science degree, plus 3-4 years of specialty training is required before we can register with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. There are 7 American Podiatry schools, and 1 Canadian Chiropody School in North America. A Podiatrist/Chiropodist attends a single track Podiatric Medical School, where medicine, surgery, immunology, radiology and pathomechanics are among the subjects studied. The modern Podiatrist/Chiropodist is uniquely placed to provide comprehensive foot care. Podiatric training involves extensive didactic and clinical aspects of normal and pathological mechanics of the lower limb. Additionally Podiatrist/Chiropodists are trained in the casting and "dressing" of orthoses and subsequent fabrication of functional and accommodative orthotic devices. Lower limb biomechanics is the domain of Podiatry, who originated the concept of orthoses and continues to lead the way in improving foot function through orthoses. What kind of treatment will I get? After an assessment with the chiropodist, treatment can vary. Any treatment that you do receive is elective. All treatment options shall be explained to you including the benefits, drawbacks and risks. Common treatments include foot physical therapy, soft tissue surgery, injection of designated substances, prescription (oral or topical medication) of designated drugs, removal of corns/ callus, trimming of nails, padding/strapping, exercise or stretching prescriptions, foot care/ footwear advice, or referral to other practitioners. Why doesn't OHIP cover my treatment? With health care cut-backs, OHIP is no longer covering foot care services. If you are interested in helping to change OHIP coverage, we would be happy to provide a template letter that you could send to your MPP (member of provincial parliament). Fees are covered under many extended health insurance plans such as Sunlife, Manulife, Liberty Health, Green Shield, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of National Defence. Patients are advised to consult there insurance carrier regarding their coverage and reimbursement prior to there appointment, our staff can also help identify your fee coverage. Our fee schedule is based on the guidelines set by our professional association. For your convenience, we accept cash, cheque, and debit, Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Prior approval is mandatory for any direct billing. If you require additional information or documentation for your insurance claim, please contact our office and we will be glad to assist you. What should I bring to my appointment? Please bring your most commonly worn footwear/ orthotics in for assessment. A list of your current medications, and anything else you feel may be relevant (if there is a rash, any moisturizers, creams you are currently using). Please remove any nail polish before your appointment. Do I need a referral? No referral is necessary, just call our clinic for an appointment. How long is my first appointment? The first appointment includes an assessment of your lower limb as well as obtaining a baseline of your medical history to inform the treatment plan. This takes about 45 minutes. How much will it cost? After the problem is diagnosed, cost will vary depending on what treatment is required.
