Description

Mike Raitt is President and Owner of The Almega Group of Companies. He started his career as a CPA in public accounting in 1985 with the largest public accounting firm in the world at that time. After 3 years in public accounting, Mike moved into corporate accounting for the ensuing 9 years as a Controller and Vice President of Finance of various multi-million dollar manufacturing companies. In 1997, Mike turned his focus to the personal financial services industry. Mike attained the position of Regional Vice President as an independent rep with a subsidiary of Citigroup and, in the process of helping hundreds of families with their financial matters, he also recruited, trained and developed dozens of new agents, helping them get a start in the industry. Sensing a need to offer a broader base of competitive products and services, Mike elected to start his own company February 2001 and has since then added additional companies under the “Almega” brand name. Here are a few things we can help with: Equity Indexed Annuities An Equity-Indexed Annuity is a unique class of annuity that uses an equity index as the basis for calculating the interest that will be credited to the annuity policy. It has all the guarantees of annuity contracts plus the potential of stock market returns with no downside risk. An Equity-Indexed Annuity gives you the ability to lock in stock market gains when the market rises, and protect your investment against losses when the market falls. In addition, an Equity-Indexed Annuity GUARANTEES a minimum annual return (typically 1-3%), even if the stock market goes down during the time you are invested. Indexed annuities can be useful when investors want better returns than are currently available in bonds, CDs or savings accounts, but don’t want to risk their capital by being fully in the stock market. Income riders are an optional benefit that may be chosen on many annuity contracts for a small cost. These riders can provide annuity holders with a guaranteed income for life without the need to give up access to the principal in the annuities cash value. Like all annuities, indexed annuities come with surrender charges for early withdrawal and the surrender periods range from three to more than 10 years. Guarantees are based on the claims-paying ability and financial strength of the issuing insurance company. If you would like to find out more about the pros and cons of Equity Indexed Annuities and whether there is a need in your financial plans, please contact us. Asset-Based Long Term Care Americans are dramatically underprepared to pay for long-term care. According to the National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information, 70 percent of people over age 65 will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetime. On average, care will be required for three years. While only one-third of today’s 65-year-olds may never need long-term care services, 20 percent will need care for longer than five years. But despite the proven need for coverage, it is estimated that only about 7 million Americans have long-term care insurance. A tremendous gap in coverage exists within a population that perhaps wrongly believes Medicare covers long-term care. It doesn’t. If long-term care is needed, an uninsured individual is forced to use up a significant portion of his or her personal assets or estate value before qualifying for Medicaid benefits. Unattractive product design, the potential for significant rate increases and consumer apathy have led us to where we are today. But, better options for are available. These products are known as asset-based long-term care. They are built either on the chassis of whole life insurance or an annuity. With these products in place, when long-term care is needed, the life insurance death benefit or annuity value is accessed to pay for qualifying expenses, and the funds are available free of federal income tax. Consumers and their financial professionals are attracted to asset-based long-term care products because of two major advantages over health-based insurance products: 1) a life insurance or annuity payout is made to beneficiaries at the time of death if the policy has not been exhausted for long-term care expenses; and 2) premiums are usually guaranteed, meaning older clients will never be exposed to an increase in the cost, especially at a time when they can least afford it. If you would like to find out more about the pros and cons of Asset-Based Long Term Care and whether there is a need in your financial plans, please contact us. Life Insurance If someone will suffer financially when you die, chances are you need life insurance. Life insurance provides cash to your family after your death. This cash (known as the death benefit) replaces your income and can help your family meet many important financial needs like funeral costs, daily living expenses and college funding. What’s more, there is no federal income tax on life insurance benefits. Most Americans need life insurance. To figure out if you need life insurance, you need to think through the worst-case scenario. If you died tomorrow, how would your loved ones fare financially? Would they have the money to pay for your final expenses (e.g., funeral costs, medical bills, taxes, debts, lawyers’ fees, etc.)? Would they be able to meet ongoing living expenses like the rent or mortgage, food, clothing, transportation costs, healthcare, etc? What about long-range financial goals? Without your contribution to the household, would your surviving spouse be able to save enough money to put the kids through college or retire comfortably? The truth is, it’s always a struggle when you lose someone you love. But your emotional struggles don’t need to be compounded by financial difficulties. Life insurance helps make sure that the people you care about will be provided for financially, even if you’re not there to care for them yourself. Life Insurance can also be used for something other than a family death benefit. People use life insurance in their businesses to fund buy/sell agreements. They use it as an employee benefit to attract top talent. They use it to pay their taxes, fund a college education and give money to charity. One of the more innovative uses of life insurance may be to use coverage to provide a living benefit rather than a death benefit. If you would like to find out more about the pros and cons of Life Insurance and whether there is a need in your financial plans, please contact us.
