Almost Home is a charitable organization, operating in Kingston, that provides temporary accommodation to families with ill or injured children receiving medical treatment in Kingston area hospitals.
Since opening its doors in November of 1992, Almost Home has helped over 4000 families by providing temporary accommodation while their children are receiving medical treatment in Kingston-area hospitals. Almost Home offers a warm, caring and affordable home-away-from-home within walking distance of both Kingston hospitals, allowing families to remain close to their sick children when they need them the most. Families have access to a comfortable bedroom, well-equipped shared kitchen, spacious common areas, laundry facilities and parking. Families are asked to contribute a nominal fee of $10 per night. No family is every turned away because of an inability to pay. Despite the best cost-control efforts and the 2000+ hours contributed each year by more than 90 volunteers, Almost Home’s annual operating expenses amount to over $260,000. While Almost Home has a close relationship with local hospitals, it is not affiliated with them. The organisation depends entirely on volunteer fundraisers and the generosity of donors in the community. It receives no government or ongoing agency support.
