Description

HISTORY OF THE 832ND ORDNANCE BATTALION The battalion was first organized in the National Army during World War I as the 3rd Heavy Mobile Ordnance Repair Shop at Camp Hancock, Georgia on 1 May 1918. After the war, it was demobilized at Camp Custer, Michigan on 15 May 1919. On 24 September 1919, the unit organized at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. On 1 April 1921, the 3rd Heavy Mobile Ordnance Repair Shop consolidated with the 106th Ordnance Depot Company to form the 32nd Ordnance Company. The 106th Ordnance Depot Company had originally been organized in August of 1917 in the National Army at Camp Jackson, South Carolina. It saw active service from that time until December 1919. During the interwar years, the 32nd Ordnance Company was reconstituted in the Regular Army on 30 June 1931. On 16 November 1931, it was inactivated at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Just prior to America’s entry into World War II, the 32nd Ordnance Company reactivated at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland on 16 June 1941. It was reorganized and redesignated as the 32nd Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company on 5 September 1942. During World War II, the 32nd Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company saw service in the European Theater of Operations to include the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. Of special significance was the company’s assistance in successfully moving the Third Army’s ordnance materiel to the front during the Battle of the Bulge. For all of its efforts during the European campaigns, the 32nd Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company received the Meritorious Unit Commendation by order of the Secretary of the Army. After the war, the company deactivated at Camp Cook, California on 15 November 1945. On 15 March 1949, the 32nd Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company became redesignated as the 32nd Ordnance Maintenance Company and was activated in Austria on 1 April of that year. On 9 March 1953, it was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 832nd Ordnance Battalion (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated). The battalion deactivated in Austria the following year on 10 March 1954. Except for Company B, the battalion reactivated at Sandia Base, New Mexico on 1 August 1955. Company B activated shortly thereafter at Fort Bliss, Texas on 12 January 1956. The battalion deactivated for the last time as a TO&E Unit at Fort Bliss on 5 December 1958. On 31 October 1986, Headquarters transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and organized as the 832nd Ordnance Battalion at the United States Army Ordnance Missile and Munitions Center and School (a TDA Unit now known as the United States Army Ordnance Munitions and Electronics Maintenance School / 59th Ordnance Brigade), located at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. That action was due as a result of the implementation of the United States Army Regimental System. On 9 June 2011, the Battalion Colors were cased at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama in preparation for the uncasing of the Battalion Colors on 26 July 2011 at Fort Lee, Virginia.
