Helping veterans rejoin society by overcoming physical/mental disabilities and chronic homelessness since 1987.
Alpha Omega Veterans Services, Inc. began in a single duplex in 1987 by a Memphis mother of two sons suffering from debilitating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after having faced combat in the Vietnam War. Originally called Alpha Omega Faith Homes until 1994, we were one of the first private nonprofit charitable organizations established in the U.S. that specialized in providing services for homeless veterans. Initial funding came from private donations and after recognizing the need for additional financial support, we established our bylaws in 1988, obtained a full charter from the State of Tennessee and received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. While in residence, each veteran receives counseling on both an individual and group basis. Our program consists of an integrated system of services developed to meet the specific needs of our veterans (food, clothing, housing, transportation, vocational assistance and rehabilitation assistance) and is administered by a staff comprised of over 30 trained professionals (certified peer counselors, licensed social workers, CNAs and RNs). Our dedicated staff members assist veteran clients to fulfill their daily goal requirements and also provide critical support to clients experiencing difficulty with receiving their well-deserved military veteran benefits from local, state and federal agencies. Since our inception, it has been our pleasure to have served more than 8,000 displaced and/or disabled veterans. Without a doubt, we have far exceeded the dreams of our founder with managed assets and revenue that have increased fifty-fold to $4.5 million. Our facilities include a drop-in/outreach center with a 19-bed transitional center, 32 one-bedroom permanent housing apartments, permanent housing in eight townhouses serving 32 veterans, 10 Single Room Occupancy (SRO) permanent housing units for the chronically homeless, a 15-bed transitional housing facility, and an 8-bed hospice-like transitional facility known as the “Life House” that serves the medically fragile. As needs for our services grow, we have pledged to never lose sight of the individual needs of every veteran client that we serve. Our mission, together with our motto, “helping veterans help themselves,” enables us to remain an undisputed leader in providing quality supportive services and housing for disabled/homeless veterans and their families.
