Beta Xi Lambda's Regional Community Service Project will be a major focus of our 2014 Regional Convention, and our convention planning efforts. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. founding members recognized the importance of literacy in our communities as a foundation for the the development of a people. The Fraternity founders were known to have adopted and supported community literacy programs as long ago as 1905. Druid Hill Elementary School in Omaha, Nebraska is Beta Xi Lambda's adopted school, and is the focus of our many efforts for successful outcomes for children. The school is home to more than 300 students. 95.5% of the school’s population qualified for free or reduced rate lunches (based on federal guidelines in 2011). Based upon the State average math and reading scores Druid Hill ranked number 446th among the 453 schools ranked in Nebraska. Working with the schools administration, we actively support and wish the best for every student that enrolls, and completes their elementary education there. In the spirit of our founders, Druid Hill Elementary School will remain the focus of our attention April 9-13, 2014 as our Midwestern Regional Convention Community Service Project. The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. - Beta Xi Lambda chapter will be collecting as many books as possible from a list of books needed for the school library. In addition, members of the Fraternities Midwestern Region will meet at the school April 9, 2014 to read to students of all grades. Finally, we have commissioned a lasting monument, in the form of a bronze reading bench to be installed at the school during our convention week. This functional, life size bench, featuring two children reading is intended to leave a lasting visually display that shows the joy and importance of reading. If you would like to assist with our efforts for the collection of books, our support efforts at the school, or the reading bench effort let us know.
