Description

Focusing on Your Function and Your Future Our core values: Amputee empowerment through education Comprehensive services Integrated teamwork State of the art prosthetics Pain management All services in one location Amputee Services of America is a center of excellence providing a full spectrum of interdisciplinary services in both an inpatient and an outpatient setting for those who have sustained an amputation. Rehabilitation Services Provided at Our Center of Excellence Physician – Dr. Robert Meier has worked with over 3800 children and adults who have sustained an amputation of one or more limbs over the past 40 years of his rehabilitation medical practice. He works with the team and the amputee to develop rehabilitation treatment goals, to prescribe a prosthesis, to manage pain and to measure the functional outcomes that should be expected for the individual amputee. Dr. Meier is quite experienced in dealing with pain issues often present in the amputee and works with the amputee to resolve problematic pain. Dr. Meier is also an experienced Life Care Planner and specializes in developing plans for persons with an amputation. Occupational Therapy – (Services are provided) at the Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center by therapists with extensive experience in training unilateral and bilateral arm amputees in the use of body powered and myoelectric prosthetic arms. Their focus is on the use of the body, with and without prostheses, to achieve the idealized level of function desired by the amputee. In addition, OT will recommend equipment that can make life easier at home and in the workplace. OT also addresses what is needed to return to independent driving and work. Physical Therapy – (Services are provided) at the P/SL Medical Center by therapists who focus on total body function, not just the most appropriate use of the leg prosthesis. Our goal is to achieve the best possible level of walking, climbing stairs, uneven ground and even running, if desired. These elements usually include aerobic conditioning and exercise education. PT will also focus on the remaining limbs to maximize balance, posture and function. Psychology – The emotional adaptation following an amputation is the most important aspect of amputation rehabilitation and is a major focus of our program for all of our amputees. Our counselors, including a psychologist and a clinical social worker, are experienced in individual and group counseling for persons who are adjusting to the changes in body image and function following amputation. Our entire team is (sensitive to) emotional issues that our amputees may confront. Prosthetist – We work with selected prosthetists and prosthetic fabrication laboratories in the Denver metro area to insure the best possible prosthetic fabrication. We recommend state of the art prosthetic components and socket designs. The prosthetists with whom we work are also present at our team meetings in order to discuss patient progress using the prosthesis. The prosthetic prescription is developed with input from the amputee and all team members. Case Management – Loss of a limb can be an overwhelming experience and introduce the person with the amputation to a wide variety of new health care professionals. We use case management to assist the amputee and their family through the maze of healthcare personnel, services and timelines. Our clinical social worker serves as our own case manager to ease the transition to becoming a healthy individual once again. Teamwork Procedures All team members meet with the amputee and their family at the beginning of the rehabilitation process for treatment planning. The patient-focused team then meets with the amputee on a monthly basis to develop objectively measurable, time-limited goals that help to monitor progress throughout the entire period of rehabilitation treatment. This team process empowers the amputee to return to their family, their community and their work as they take control of their future life. Associated Programs We are closely allied with the members of the Institute for Limb Preservation and work in concert with its team of specialists. Our medical team includes orthopedic, plastic and vascular surgeons, infectious disease and wound care specialists, and pain management physicians. This broad spectrum of amputee specialists enables us to provide a complete array of services that will enhance the comprehensive management of the person with an amputation. All of these services are located in or near our offices at the Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver. Robert H. Meier, III, MD, Director 1601 E. 19th Avenue, Suite 5100 Denver, Colorado 80218 Phone: 303-286-8692 Fax: 303-286-8716 E-mail: info@amprehab.com Website: www.amprehab.com Follow-up We believe that regular and periodic follow-up with the amputee is an essential feature of our rehabilitation program. Through follow-up, we continue to assess the function achieved and the amputee’s success with their rehabilitation progress. These visits also assess whether the prosthesis is working as the amputee or the team would ideally wish. We also introduce state of the art prosthetic components to the amputee as advances in prosthetics occur. Through this regular follow-up, we enjoy observing and measuring the marvelous success that our amputee’s have been able to achieve.
