"Adult Quest for Unity and Altruism." Enjoy the holidays! AQUA will return to an active status in 2016. Thank you! AQUA Corps goes beyond the typical volunteer experience by adding a service learning component. Adding education is key to creating a transformative and lasting impact in both the volunteers and those in need. AQUA volunteers learn information about the causes, factors, and solutions that impact vulnerable populations and communities we serve. This awareness not only opens minds and changes perspectives, it empowers volunteers to become advocates for those they have served. Given this experience and knowledge, volunteers share memories and information from their service with their family and friends raising community awareness and the need for change.

Description

Philadelphia Homeless Outreach: Every other Sunday, Aqua Corps volunteers gather to prepare about 100 bagged lunches for the homeless. Each person contributes a different item for the lunches, including everything from cheese to oranges. After about 100 lunches are prepared, the group goes by foot and distributes the bagged lunches to homeless individuals in various sections of Philadelphia. Aqua Corps volunteers also provide outreach information regarding homeless services in Philadelphia. The location for preparing the bagged lunches rotates between South Jersey and Philadelphia. This service project was started by Aqua Corps volunteer, Dan Kirkpatrick. Sunday Camden Homeless Dinners: On the 2nd Sunday of each month, Aqua Corps hosts the Sunday Dinner for the Homeless at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Camden, NJ. Aqua Corps volunteers meet at the church in the late afternoon to prepare the main dish. Aqua Corps volunteers each contribute a part of the dinner, including dessert! Aqua Corps volunteers serve around 100 patrons and build relationships with them. Weekly Food Rescue: Every Saturday morning, Aqua Corps volunteers meet at the Willingboro ACME at 9:00 AM to pick up a 400 - 1,000 lbs of donated food! The food items are placed in the volunteers' vehicles and brought to the TOUCH NJ food bank in Camden, NJ. The volunteers weigh the food items that they bring in for donation purposes; and then place the food items on the appropriate shelves and/or refrigerators. Once the volunteers are finished, the TOUCH NJ food bank is stocked and ready to feed vulnerable individuals and families for the week! Thanksgiving Celebration for the Homeless: AQUA Corps's Annual Thanksgiving Celebration for the Homeless is our most well-known event. In fact, it was our first event! The night before Thanksgiving, fifty homeless individuals from Camden and fifty homeless individuals from Philadelphia are picked up on a limo bus and taken to a wedding hall in South Jersey. Once inside, volunteers serve our dignified guests a catered turkey dinner. Our guests and volunteers dance together and enjoy a live band! At the end of the evening, our guests are given a winter coat and several pairs of socks. Holiday Basket Drives: AQUA Corps coordinates a basket drive each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This past November, AQUA Corps volunteers gathered 150 baskets complete with all of the necessities for a Thanksgiving Dinner - including the frozen turkey, sides, dessert and even decorations. These baskets were personally hand-delivered by our volunteers to the doors of needy families and individuals in the Camden County area. Getting our Hands Dirty: AQUA Corps has organized several projects where our volunteers helped beautify and revitalize spaces in our community that are designated for helping those in need. Our volunteers have painted a local shelter, painted and cleaned the kitchen at St. Paul's Church where we hold our Sunday Dinners, clean and decorate the TOUCH NJ Food Bank, and more! AQUA Corps hopes that by making these spaces brighter, we will create an environment for hope, change, and service. Special Events: AQUA Corps responds to the needs in our community and the interests of our volunteers. We have hosted a wide range of special events such as a pasta dinner to fund raise for the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia; a site that one of our volunteers holds very close to his heart. We have held two beef and beers to raise funds for African and Caribbean immigrant families with chronic and serious health conditions. We are involved with and support the events our volunteers or partner organizations participate in or organize. AQUA Corps volunteers can be found at walks or races for various causes, bowlathons, neighborhood festivals, Philadelphia Union Games, and more - the list continues to grow!
