A Montessori home based preschool for 3 to 6 year olds.
Araluen Montessori is an ideal learning environment for 3-6 year old students based on the studies and curriculum designed by Maria Montessori. The Montessori method closely aligns with the Australian Early Years Learning Framework The curriculum allows and encourages the students to become independent, develop their concentration and experience the joy of learning. The curriculum is divided into 5 areas. Practical life- Provides children with the opportunity to learn everyday life skills such as dressing, pouring, transferring, preparing food, sewing, personal hygiene, and grace and courtesy. Sensorial- Activities that help the student develop all their senses allowing them to better absorb information and learn from their environment. Math- Working sequentially with math activities utilising concrete materials children build a foundation of basic and complex math functions to support their learning now and in the future. Language- Speaking, listening, pre reading, pre writing, reading and writing skills are developed using such materials as sandpaper letters, metal insets and the moveable alphabet. Culture- Encompassing Geography, Science, History, Music and Art. We celebrate diversity and focus on building respect for all and an interest in our wonderful world. The learning environment which I provide is based on a traditional Montessori approach taking place during a three hour work cycle. During this time students are at liberty to explore the didactic materials and classroom environment. Children may choose to work independently, with peers in small groups or may choose to participate in small group lessons. All activités in the classroom will be demonstrated to the student in a developmentally appropriate sequence unique to the Child's needs. This in turn allows children to follow their innate desire to learn at liberty and meet their precise needs through a carefully designed learning environment. Grace and courtesy play an important part in a Montessori setting, lessons for example in greeting people and being hospitable, are not only taught specifically they are also role modelled and high expectations of behaviour with positive reinforcement allows children to experience the satisfaction of accomplishment. Throughout my University studies and teaching experience I have not come across a more holistic approach to Early Childhood Education. Modern studies are continually supporting the findings of Maria Montessori. Recognising that children absorb enormous quantities of information between the ages 3 to 6 and recognising the important need for perfection in the connection between the child, their learning environment and the prepared teacher.
