Overcome the injustices of persistent poverty and social exclusion by bringing together people from all walks of life
The Fourth World Movement has been working in New Orleans since 1990. In 2011 we moved to a new home in the 7th Ward. Our current projects include a weekly Street Library in the 7th Ward, a stoop talk project, a neighborhood garden, and the Summer Festival of Learning, an activity-intensive salute to children, community, and alternative learning. The new center includes a large yard, a multi-purpose hall and access to a community garden, where children from the Street Library learn to grow everything from beets to bananas. Working alongside other organizations and a network of members, we work to support families in their efforts to access their basic human rights to housing, juvenile justice, education, and health care. In 2012, the book “Not Meant To Live Like This: Weathering the Storm of Our Lives in New Orleans,” a collection of testimonies from 50 co-authors about their lives in New Orleans before and after hurricane Katrina, was published. The book has been designed to act as a launch pad for continuing discussion, workshops and community organizing events, and we have begun a new round of “stoop talks” to bring together communities around the issues discussed in the book.
