APA! is not a typical shelter setting. Our innovative programs save more than 6,000 animals from euthanasia annually, keeping Austin no-kill since 2011. Prior to 2008 when APA! started rescuing and adopting cats and dogs, 50%, or 14,000 of the animals entering the city’s shelter were euthanized. APA! examined the gaps in existing lifesaving efforts and found there were groups of animals for which life-saving programs did not exist. APA! created programs targeting the groups of animals facing certain euthanasia. These programs lead to a measurable impact on the community’s save rate – and Austin’s status as the largest No-Kill City in the Nation. In order to help serve the huge volume of animals entering the city shelter, APA! created the largest pet Foster Program in the US with up to 1,000 animals in foster during our busy summer season. This triples our capacity to save lives. Hundreds of extremely dedicated volunteers donate their skills, expertise, and love to APA! – to the tune of more than 2,000 hours EACH WEEK or the equivalent of 50 full-time staff members. According to the current valuation of volunteer time of $22.14 per hour (2012), determined annually by the Independent Sector, APA! volunteers contributed $2,334,109 during 2013. Our Medical Triage Clinic serves the 500 critically injured and ill animals that enter our city shelter and face euthanasia. This differs from traditional shelters because it functions like an emergency hospital as well as a wellness clinic for all the pets in our care. Also unlike traditional no kill humane societies, we spread our resources over this large group of animals which means we often employ low cost but innovative solutions to medical problems rather than spend thousands of dollars for one or two pets per year. Connected to our clinic is our Parvo Puppy ICU – it’s the first program of its kind in the country. Parvovirus is highly contagious and deadly if not caught and treated quickly, but we’re able to safely isolate and treat 500 puppies a year until they are healed and adoption ready. Our Orphan Kitten Nursery was created based on a wildlife rescue center’s method of handling large numbers of incoming baby wildlife. Up to 2,000 orphan kittens used to be euthanized every year in Austin because there were not enough foster homes able to take them. We save them all by housing up to 100 kittens at once in our nursery, and have a huge volunteer force to feed the kittens and keep them alive until a foster home can be found once they are older and easier to care for. Our other programs include a Cat Ringworm Program (which is just a skin infection similar to athlete’s foot) that isolates and treats the 250 cats per year that were traditionally killed and our Dog Behavior Program rehabilitates over 500 large breed dogs with behavioral challenges through daily dog playgroups and structured training regimens. Our largest program is Adoptions because no matter which program a life needed to be saved, they all have to find permanent homes. Our goal is to have a state of the art adoption center that incorporates cutting edge marketing methods to facilitate the movement of pets into those homes. Through these innovative programs Austin has become the largest No-Kill city in the United States. Since our inception, we have found that almost every large city in the US has the same gaps as existed in Austin in 2008. We are now a model for communities nationwide, and through our American Pets Alive! program we train other communities on how to create and manage the same lifesaving programs so that ultimately no pets have to die unnecessarily in America.
