Description

Firm in our understanding that heterosexism and homo/bi/transphobia have an impact on the health and well-being of all in our society, we work to improve acceptance of gender and sexual diversity. We are committed to the belief that health, defined as a state of complete physical, emotional, mental, existential and social wellness and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, is a fundamental human right and that the attainment of the highest level of health for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, and queer individuals requires action by all levels of society. Based on our understanding of the key determinants of health, we endeavour, in our services, to address the whole being and the environment in which the individual lives. We believe that our ongoing dialogue with the community provides the context and the knowledge which drive our programming. The Centre provides a supportive place for people in our community regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, family and marital status, ability, gender, sexual orientation, age or income and social status.

General Info

OUTSaskatoon offers a range of services including: => Peer Support Counselling: either in person or over the phone, this allows people to ask their questions, explore their feelings, understand their issues and figure out a way to a more fulfilling life. No appointments are necessary, there is no cost, and anyone who answers the phone will be trained in peer support, be non-judgmental, and be ready to listen. (If you want to talk to someone, call 665-1224 or 1-800-358-1833) => Information Resources: whether you need information on safer-sex practices, gender identity, body image, coming out, finding a LGBTQ-positive physician, or a number of other topics, OUTSaskatoon is an information resource centre. Ask a question on our phone-line, drop-in for an in-person discussion, arrange an educational presentation, or read some of the books in our library or brochures we publish (located on our website). => Groups and Clubs: OUTSaskatoon is home to a number of groups and clubs where people can again get together and meet new people and become part of the greater community. => Social Connection: through our drop-in centre, social groups, and TV area, OUTSaskatoon also functions as a community centre where people can feel safe in an LGBTQ-positive environment. You can watch cable TV (including OUTtv) or one of our 200 LGBTQ-themed DVDs, play the GameCube, peruse queer books and magazines, chat with staff and volunteers, or just hang-out. => Social Events: OUTSaskatoon hosts community-building events to create spaces where people can come together and have some fun. => Education: We provide educational outreach to professionals who work in health care, social services, and human services, educational institutes, students in schools and universities, community members, and effectively anyone who is interested in coming to a better understanding of gender and sexual diversity. For more information on any of these services, groups, or clubs please e-mail us at hello@outsaskatoon.ca or just give us a call during office hours and we will be very glad to answer any of your questions.
