The Bannerman Park Foundation is a committee of citizens devoted to the revitalization of Bannerman Park and restoring it as a cherished city landmark for future generations.
In 2010, the Bannerman Park Foundation was established as a not-for-profit group of interested volunteers. Bannerman Park is approaching 150 years old. It is the oldest and most historic park in the province and has not seen any major investment for many years. Over time, the Park has lost many of the features that were special to Victorian parks and the master plan will redevelop Bannerman Park into a jewel in the heart of the city. Implementation of the plan depends on fundraising. The 150th anniversary of Governor Bannerman donating the land for the park to the people of St. John’s will take place in 2014. The Foundation’s goal is to finish the work by then and efforts will be on-going to raise the money for each different projects. Each piece of work will have its own budget, but overall, it is expected that the Foundation will have to raise $3 million. The City of St. John’s will match all funds raised dollar-for-dollar. The Foundation and its committees will work in close co-operation with community groups who use the Park, like the Folk Arts Council which endorses the master plan. The Foundation is working closely with St. John’s City Council to ensure the rejuvenation initiative supports a strong future for the festival, as well as other events.

City of St. John’s January 22, 2014 UNAUTHORIZED USE HAMPERS LOOP REOPENING The Loop at Bannerman Park remains closed while City staff rebuild ice that was melted by rain and removed by wind on Sunday, Jan. 12, completely exposing the underlying concrete on sections of the trail. Each day since, City staff have been working to rebuild the ice, completed in layers 1/16th of an inch to a final minimum thickness of one inch. Unfortunately, the ice rebuilding efforts are being hampered by unauthorized use of The Loop at night. The ice remains thin on sections of the trail and when skated on pieces are breaking off. This has considerably slowed down the progress of rebuilding the ice as staff have had to start from the beginning of the ice rebuilding process each day. Skating on The Loop while the underlying concrete is exposed is also a safety concern. While The Loop is closed there is a fence surrounding the trail, signage is posted indicating it is closed and the lights are turned off. City staff are working each day to rebuild the ice for the enjoyment of all. The public are asked to refrain from skating on The Loop during this time, for operational and safety reasons, and to respect the closed signage. We will notify the public through a media release posted on our website and postings on our social media sites when The Loop reopens.
