Helping animals since 1869! We are an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of pets and people in the community. www.mdspca.org The Maryland SPCA adopts out more than 3,500 needy and unwanted pets each year. There is no time limit for an animal to stay in our care until he is adopted. Our staff and volunteers provide excellent care to the dogs and cats in need. Each pet receives medical care including neuter surgery, vaccinations, treatments, as well as TLC. Enrichment is also provided so that the animals have positive activities to reduce stress. Our state-of-the art adoption center provides warmth and comfort while the pets await new homes. Thanks to the support of the community, we are able to provide these programs that help pets and people and save animals’ lives.

Okay, friends, we need your help again. This is Nikki, and she needs a forever home. Nikki is what is often referred to in sheltering as a "throwaway momma." She came into BARCS completely full of milk, with no puppies in sight. It is likely that her puppies were sold at an age too young to be taken from their mom, and then she was discarded. She still had fresh nibble marks from puppies trying to feed. Her puppies were never recovered, and so Nikki was understandably in utter distressed the first few weeks here at BARCS. She was a momma with no babies to mother. Whether you are a dog or a person, you can feel the utter heartbreak of Nikki's situation. But, slowly, as her body realized there were no babies to nurse, Nikki began to trust our shelter staff and volunteers. It took time, but now Nikki is a trusting, loving, wiggly girl. She has been at BARCS since late March, making her one of BARCS' longest-term dogs. Nikki really REALLY needs a special adopter to give her a home, a last name and a sense of family. So, why is Nikki being looked over at our shelter? We suspect it's because of her long, hanging tummy--it sags, it looks a little funny, people twist their nose and ask all kinds of questions about it--but it's also pink, soft and an important part of her story. It should not disqualify Nikki from being loved. We know that she wants more than anything in the entire world to finally go to a home where she is adored, just for being Nikki--a family that loves her not for producing babies, but for being THE "baby." Nikki plays well with other pups here at BARCS, but we don't have any history of how she is with kitties. If you have room in your heart and home, please, PLEASE give Nikki a chance. She is a beautiful girl, with a beautiful heart--saggy belly and all.

Author and illustrator of Mutts, Patrick McDonnell, writes about how the good life of his two pets inspired him to think of pets without homes. Drawing comics advocating for pet adoption, gave new meaning to his work. If you don't recognize the name, you'll recognize the comics—we guarantee it!

Today we had a very special visit from Maryland State Police Officer Justin Fohs and Bob Iman, president of the FOP Trooper Lodge 69, who came down to BARCS to show us their brand new, safe K9 Unit vehicle. As you may know, FOP 69 partners with BARCS for Troopers and Tails, and annual, joint charity golf tournament. This event raises more than $30,000 annually for the animals at BARCS and for the charitable efforts of FOP 69. Last year, FOP 69 was excited to donate their portion to the State Police K9 Unit, so that their furry work companions can travel safely. We love and appreciate everything FOP 69 does for the animals at BARCS, with leadership from our board member, Ritchie Brooks. What a fitting gift to award to Officer Fohs and his buddy—it was a very special unveiling to be shared with our team.

The cutest kitten video you've ever seen—no, really! This is three-week-old Bitty, she was found all alone under a car. No mom or siblings in sight. Luckily, the couple who found her noticed this little bug before the wheels started turning. Watch her wake up from a long, snuggly nap.
