Description

The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is a joint graduate school of the three renowned math departments of the public research universities in Berlin: Freie Universität, Technische Universität Berlin, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The BMS is the one of the assets in Berlin’s academic landscape. In October 2006, the BMS was awarded one of the 18 prestigious graduate school awards by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal Government for its innovative concept, its strong cross-disciplinary focus, and its outstanding teaching schedule tailored to the needs of students in an international environment. This was reconfirmed on 15 June 2012 when the DFG announced that the BMS will also receive funding for a second period until 2017.

General Info

The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is a joint graduate school of the mathematics departments of the three major Berlin universities, TU Berlin, FU Berlin, and HU Berlin. We offer a uniform setting for graduate studies (from Bachelor to Ph.D.) in mathematics in Berlin, a coordinated, highly diverse course program in English (Phase I, from bachelor to qualifying exams in two years), German language skills are not necessary, access to all math research groups in Berlin for a PhD (Phase II), in particular, to the DFG Research Training Groups (Graduiertenkollegs) and other ongoing research projects, intensive mentoring during the whole duration of studies, and support in non mathematical issues ranging from housing to visas and from child care to language courses. We invite excellent mathematics students from Berlin, Germany, Europe and all over the world to join BMS - and to make good use of the ample opportunities offered by the rich and diverse mathematics teaching and research environment. Depending on the individual background, admission is to Phase I (typically with a bachelor) or directly to Phase II (for example, for students holding a master/diploma). Besides striving for excellence, BMS is actively pursuing the goals of internationality, gender equality and diversity: We set the explicit goal to have half of our students come from outside Germany, and to reach a 50 percent representation of female students. The BMS actively and explicitly welcomes and embraces diversity. We will take measures to create an environment that is accepting, liberal, and supportive for its students, faculty and employees. The city of Berlin, with its tradition of multicultural openness, its good relations to the East and the West, and its rich cultural and academic life, provides an excellent setting for this. We are looking forward to your visit to Berlin!

International Graduate Research School in Berlin with a focus is on the interface between the humanities and behavioral sciences with the neurosciences The Berlin School of Mind and Brain is an international Graduate Research School. It offers a three-year doctoral degree program in English. The focus is on the interface between the humanities and behavioral sciences with the neurosciences. Main topics for research at the School are ‘conscious and unconscious perception’, ‘decision-making’, ‘language’, ‘brain plasticity and lifespan ontogeny’, and ‘mental disorders and brain dysfunction’. It is our mission to train outstanding young scientists to become experts in one of the relevant fields, to provide them with knowledge over the gamut of mind and brain research, and to give them the ability, and the opportunity, to cooperate with researchers from other disciplines. What do ‘mind’ or ‘brain’ in training and research stand for? Mind stands for humanities and behavioral sciences such as philosophy, linguistics, behavioral and cognitive psychology, neuroeconomics; brain stands for neurosciences such as: neurophysiology, medicine (esp. neurology and psychiatry), computational neuroscience, neurobiology. The School closely collaborates with seven neuroscience schools in Berlin (www.neuroscience-berlin.com), especially with the two Ph.D. programs Medical Neurosciences and Computational Neuroscience. It is a member of Neuroschools Germany and of the Network of European Neuroscience Schools (NENS).
