Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens. In 2012 Big Brothers Big Sisters Abbotsford Mission Ridge Meadows and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upper Fraser Valley formally became Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley. As one single agency we pursue a greater goal of responsive and sustainable mentoring programs across the Greater Fraser Valley. Separately, our two agencies have been creating friendships since 1969. What began as matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers has grown to a more inclusive and diverse array of programs to serve both boys and girls. Together we have served thousands of families in the Fraser Valley enhancing and changing the lives of not only children, but volunteers and often entire families through our mentoring services. We have several regional and common pillars of support and development internally and in our communities. What we started over 40 years ago continues to demonstrate resiliency both within the organization and in the communities we serve. We are an organization built on a solid, long-standing foundation of trust, respect and transparency. We take every possible step to ensure safety of all individuals involved in our matches. We manage our donors’ and volunteers’ contributions with the highest regard. We proactively communicate our decisions on allocation of resources and measured outcomes to our communities, clients, donors and volunteers. We are innovators and experts in child and youth mentorship. We continually provide well-measured programs which are relevant and rewarding for donors, volunteers, partners, communities and children and youth. We empower others through strong leadership and a clear vision to improve the lives of children and youth, ultimately having a significant impact on our society. We embrace our key Mission and Vision with energy and enthusiasm.
For just a few hours a month a volunteer can guide a child to succeed. Big Brothers Big Sisters is different from other mentoring organizations in that we provide professional and experienced support to our volunteers and families. We have one commodity that is unique and quantifiable – a system with nearly 100 years of experience nationally in mentoring children. All else that we do and that we are has been easily copied and delivered by someone else but the name and brand and systems of mentoring are what makes a BBBS mentor program distinct and gives it unique value. We carefully screen our volunteers with nationally recognized and approved processes. We ensure our programs meet the needs of our children and youth. We support our children and youth and are careful to determine whether our programs meet their needs, and provide referrals to other social services when further or different needs are identified. We provide care and concern to our families and community backing them with action. All volunteers are carefully and thoroughly screened including a mandatory criminal record check, driver’s abstract, and detailed interviews. They participate in a 4 - 5 hour child safety training session. Matches are monitored on a strict schedule with monthly contact including personal meetings with all individuals involved in the first six months and quarterly contact thereafter. After matches mature, at minimum, there will be annual in person meetings with the parent, child and volunteer. Mentoring coordinators are always available between the scheduled contacts to answer any questions or address any concerns. Building a Child's future through the friendship and guidance of mentoring.
