Its a bummer that the Midlands Business Journal doesn't post its content on their website - I'm going to be quoted again, but no links to share.
Was doing some research just now, and found that we rank 5th when you punch in 'local seo' into Google (as long as you're sitting in Omaha), and we're the only local company to rank on the first page - behind the two biggest SEO blogs in the world, the most popular SEO website plugin, and the biggest national local SEO tutorial site. Must be doing something right.
I should thank my pitiful competition among SEO companies in Omaha for being so bad that I have enough time to both stay at the top of Google rankings, handle client work, expand into subcontracting and build a branch office in Las Vegas. You're too kind.
Deciding on a domain name can be pretty important early on in a project involving a new website... and can be a very time consuming process. Looking through names that haven't already been registered, as well as looking through names that are being squatted and are for sale. The latter can be amusing, to say the least. While looking for domains with a particular term in it, boy can you see the effects of some of Google's algorithm updates... so so many domains that so obviously match exact search terms - something that Google thankfully has made just about worthless these days. Keep it up Google.

This talks to why I advise clients to skip spammy / cheap link building schemes, and focus on PR to bring in new traffic and help with search rank: http://www.shiftcomm.com/2014/05/google-validates-that-pr-is-seo-in-patent-filing/
Someone just offered me a thousand dollars to "rent my website". I'm assuming that meant some sort of spam linking...? Regardless - I blocked and reported them for spamming.
I doubt that people read this page for hosting advice much (if at all, haha), but lemme tell ya... I LOVE the performance and functionality of Web Synthesis - they're really the premier WordPress managed host as far as I'm concerned (worth every penny of the $27 a month base package - I host three of my own sites there). BUT... if you need a host that allows you access to a dev site behind a proxy or something, then WS is NOT for you. Their proxy is buggy as hell... about 1/4 of the time I try to get through it to sites I'm working on, something buggers up and I have to go through a dance with support yet again to get it all reset, yet again. I've found a much more efficient and easy way to transfer sites though, so for clients (and my own projects in the future) that want to host with them, I'll work on the site on my own little hidden dev server, and move them to WS when they're ready for public consumption. UGH - hello Thursday! At least this coffee is good, haha
The only thing that makes getting a regular amount of emails from people trying to sell links (very big no no to Google/Bing/Yahoo) is the satisfaction I get for emailing Google with their contact information and what they told me. Hopefully I've done my small part to make a dent in the black hat SEO huckster / snake oil salesmen world.
Yes, I know this is strange... but I find digging through hundreds of WordPress themes, to find the PERFECT layout & design for a project, to be quite relaxing.
