Black Phoenix is a community space opening soon, in Winnipeg's historic exchange district. We are in the Albert Street Autonomous Zone Co-op (the Azone).
The Black Phoenix is rising at 91 Albert Street, bringing back the main floor presence at the Albert Street Autonomous Zone, in Winnipeg's historic exchange district. The recent closing of Mondragon was the end of an era and it's created the opportunity for the birth of a new community developed destination for activists, artists, and community activities. Black Phoenix will open its doors this spring, with superb coffee, a light menu and a welcoming space for a variety of gatherings and programs; including a new music incubation space, a building selection of Indigenous and Anarchist books and book launches, pop up shops, showcases for artists, capacity building workshops and featuring local artisans and in house and bookable events space. The management of the Black Phoenix is a seasoned mixology of seven people, including Mondragon co-founder, Paul Burrows, Bitter Sweet caterer, Jacqueline Bissoon, hostess, designer and artist, Marguerite Yarmie, musician, SNAC chairman and community organizer Gerry Atwell, herbalist/gardener and fermented foods advocate Shannon Bahuaud, Ragpickers costumer and vintage clothing icon Kristen Andrews and Susanne McCrea, film maker, performance artist and social justice/environmental activist. Together they bring a wide range of complimentary backgrounds, excitement and extensive networks in the arts, music, culinary, theatre, costuming, activist, video and mixed media productions arenas. We look forward to re-opening the doors to this iconic community space.
