Description

As long as horses have been shod with metal shoes, people have made useful and artful objects from the worn and otherwise to-be-discarded shoes. Since old shoes come in a variety of shapes and sizes (not to mention conditions), the opportunities for creativity are practically unlimited. Here you will find objects that I've made over the years and that my friends have enjoyed, sometimes as gifts, sometimes as purchases. Several are original designs while many borrow from time-honored concepts that you can find practically anywhere. Hopefully you will enjoy looking at the photos. If a particular object interests you and you are considering a purchase, I would welcome hearing from you. Bob Stokstad

About: Fabrication: Custom Orders: Payment: Contact About: As long as horses have been shod with metal shoes, people have made useful and artful objects from the worn and otherwise to-be-discarded shoes. Since old shoes come in a variety of shapes and sizes (not to mention conditions), the opportunities for creativity are practically unlimited. Here you will find objects that I've made over the years and that my friends have enjoyed, often as gifts, sometimes as purchases. Several are original designs while many borrow from time-honored concepts that you can find practically anywhere. Hopefully you will enjoy looking at the photos. If a particular object interests you and you are considering a purchase, I would welcome hearing from you via email at rgs@jstokstad.com or Facebook message. Fabrication: The cleaned shoe exhibits the marks of its history, much like the grain in wood. To preserve this, with few exceptions (e.g., garden art), all shoes are cleaned mechanically using primarily wire brushes. (In contrast to rust removal by chemical cleaning, this produces the best patina.) At the end, the entire piece is coated with a clear satin coat of polyurethane. This produces a pleasing, durable finish that, if desired, can always be covered with paint. I emphasize quality and care in fabrication. You can see pieces I've made over the years and my methods of fabrication at http://www.jstokstad.com/Horseshoe_Craft. Many of the objects shown there will eventually appear here. For a fabrication video, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxvpQ0VinPE Custom orders. In a sense, any order is custom because no two similar pieces are exactly alike. But I enjoy working with customers to make or modify a design to suit their specific wishes. An obvious example would be picture frames. Another is to make an object from the shoes of your own horse. So, save your horse's shoes the next time your farrier comes and tell me what you'd like made from them. There is no extra cost for this - I do enjoy having contact with my customers that goes beyond the process of just selling something. Payment: Personal Check, PayPal, Credit Card. California sales tax will be added where applicable. Shipping mode and costs will be decided mutually. Contact: rgs@jstokstad.com
