Boone Station State Historic Site

at 240 Gentry Road, Lexington

Daniel Boone (1734-1820), known for his role in the exploring and settling of the Kentucky frontier decided that the settlement of Boonesborough had become far too crowded. In December 1779, Boone and his family established Boone’s Station. At its height, the community had 15 to 20 families, including the Boone, Barrow, Hays, Morgan, Muir, Scholl and, Stinson families.

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery

The Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery is located on South Main Street in downtown Lexington, Virginia, less than a mile from the campus of the Virginia Military Institute. Formerly known as the Presbyterian Cemetery, it was renamed for legendary Confederate general Stonewall Jackson, who was interred here after his death on May 10, 1863.

On November 13, 1925, Miles Frank Yount struck oil at the Spindletop field in Beaumont, Texas. The fields, which had been dormant since the early 1900’s, produced over 340,000 barrels of oil an acre per year, pumping in excess of 50 million barrels within 5 years. Now financially secure, Miles Frank and wife Pansy established a stable of American Saddlebred horses, quickly becoming recognized as a leader in the industry. On November 13, 1933, the eighth anniversary of Spindletop’s second discovery, Miles Frank Yount died of a heart attack at age 53. Left as the beneficiary of great wealth, Mildred (Pansy) Yount chose Kentucky as the place she would start anew.Spindletop Farm was established in 1935 on 800 acres of land.

The Dawson County Historical Society was founded in 1958 in Lexington, Nebraska to preserve the unique history and culture of Dawson County. The Society's first project was the restoration of the District #55 School. In the following years, through the generosity of our members, patrons and visitors, we have continued to grow. Our current facility, along Taft Street in Lexington, was opened to the public in 1969. The Dawson County Historical Society is a private non-profit education institution whose mission is to promote a greater understanding of the history of Dawson County and south-central Nebraska. The Society collects, preserves, exhibits, and interprets that history and its relationship to Nebraska and the wider world for the benefit of all ages and interests.
