Description

Now in our fifth year of existence, the Boston Latin School Youth Climate Action Network is an after school environmental club comprised of middle and high school students at the oldest school in the country. The students of BLS Youth CAN are the leaders of Youth CAN, a coalition of youth who seek to address the problem of global climate change in our communities and beyond and to promote education for sustainability. BLS Youth CAN is pursuing far-reaching initiatives. Students founded a youth network that now has 20 member groups at other schools in Massachusetts. BLS Youth CAN does extensive educational outreach, maintains numerous community partnerships, and organizes free events that serve dozens of schools and community organizations every year.

General Info

BLS Youth CAN holds an annual fall kick off fair, and an annual spring youth climate summit that are both free to all. Students launched a statewide education for sustainability campaign to incorporate sustainability lessons across subjects for grades 7-12 and organized annual teacher trainings culminating in the development of sustainability curriculum now in use at Boston Latin School. The youth network will spread it to more schools. With a local architect, students designed plans for a state-of-the-art shared green roof where schools will come learn about sustainability. BLS Youth CAN is partnering with local colleges in a green roof coalition. BLS Youth CAN students are mentoring elementary students. BLS Youth CAN recently launched a summer green jobs program for youth that will result in energy audits and new green teams across the city. We are leaders in the local green schools movement. In just 4 short years, BLS Youth CAN has established a successful, well-documented model for green schools, green curriculum, and green youth leadership, and the club raises all funds themselves
