HISTORY and SOCIAL STUDIES is a core part of BPS: There's a petition urging BPS to keep History and Social Studies as a core part of our work. We couldn't agree more. Here's what Interim Superintendent McDonough has to say: Thank you for writing. I think we all agree that these subjects are important. I looked into this, and both History and Social Studies will continue, and in fact are even being enhanced. We are making some changes in terms of how we organize ourselves centrally, which may be what you have been hearing about. For the next school year our History and Social Studies Department will be within Humanities. Some people are also asking about the status of Facing History and Ourselves, which is going to continue for next year. In terms of what students will see, we will continue to increase the use of History and Social Studies texts used during English Language Arts instruction in order to increase the teaching of History and Social Studies content in all grades. We are also continuing to work with partners and teacher teams to add additional History elective courses in high school. I want to thank you for reaching out and for signing the petition. I can certainly understand how some might come away with the impression that we are eliminating a department during our central office reorganization. In fact, however, we are attempting to embed History and Social Studies education into the "bigger picture," which will help students and schools make sure that it is a core part of every student's learning experience. I am happy to speak with you further or connect you with people who can offer up more information.
ATTENTION TEACHERS: Help us provide better teaching and learning tools and support! BPS has partnered with the District Management Council (DMC) and we’d love to hear from you. As we continue transitioning to the Common Core, it is important for us to understand which materials are most or least helpful to our teachers. Please see below to learn more about how we can best support teachers with materials and instruction in core content areas. Note: this is not a tool connected to a teacher's evaluation or to monitor use of only adopted materials; rather, to help guide next steps based on current experiences. Please check your BPS email for a unique link to access the survey tool and respond by Friday, May 10th. Contact DMC with any questions: firstname.lastname@example.org or 1-877-DMC-3500. Many thanks in advance!
