General Info

A Brief History Brampton Caledon Community Living first began as The Brampton and District Association for Retarded Children in 1958. The organization was founded to provide support to children with a developmental disability as well as their families. Initially the association focused on children and their families. A nursery and preschool comprised the first services offered. As people supported grew older services geared to adults were offered through vocational, residential and family supports. In 1975 the constitution was revised and the association became the Brampton/Caledon Association for the Mentally Retarded. The organization had acquired resources necessary for expansion from the Ontario government through the Williston Report. Rapid growth took place as government started to fund a wide range of services. Situated on almost two acres, the house at 34 Church Street West is one of the oldest and finest in Brampton. Major George Wright, a popular M.P. and flour miller built the house in 1851. The nickname "The Castle" came from the tower or turret on the south side. John Alexander Thistle, a store keeper and grain buyer, was the second owner of the house in the 1860's and then Mr. Hughes owned it until 1873. Between 1873 and 1900, a Mr. Foster owned "The Castle"and in 1900, Mr. George L. Williams, head of the Williams Shoe Company, acquired title. Shortly after 1900 the tower was destroyed by fire. In 1914, Mr. J.W. Hewetson, head of the Hewetson Shoe Company, purchased the home. Mr. And Mrs. Davis, the son-in-law and daughter of Mr. Hewetson, acquired title in the early 1930's and Premier William Davis grew up here. Stan Stonehouse purchased the property in 1952. The Stonehouse family owned the home until September 1973. Brampton Caledon Community Living purchased the house in 1973. It was officially opened on January 24, 1976 by the Honourable William G. Davis, Premier of Ontario. Over the next years Brampton Caledon Community Living expanded its services to include Community Living Supports to provide a variety of living arrangements , Service Coordination to assist families to obtain services in the community, Respite funding for short-term support to parents caring for a child or adult living at home, Alliance Personnel to provide employment services to the job seeker, Norpak Custom Packaging to provide meaningful work activities in a supportive work environment, Youth Services to provide a variety of initiatives to young adults, and Day Services to provide a variety of recreational and leisure opportunities in the community. In 2007 Brampton Caledon Community Living celebrated 50 years of existence with a spectacular Gala at Brampton's Rose Theatre. The Honorable William G. Davis and Stephen Lewis and 500 people joined in the celebration. On March 31, 2009 Community Living Organizations across Ontario celebrated the closure of the last three large institutions in the province for individuals who have an intellectual disability.
