Description

Breaking Barriers goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote strong interpersonal skills, pro-social friendships, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Reestablishing personal relationships will give a sense of individual responsibility that will give the youth commitment to follow through on a path of adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Because of repeated failures in the classroom and the development of destructive habits, at-risk young people have lost faith in the possibilities that await them if they are successful in putting their lives together. To accomplish this goal, young people must be in a caring, inclusive learning environment that promotes their best effort and reinforces personal respect. Breaking Barriers Mentor Service is a program that is a direct response to the growing number of youth crimes, those who are already entangled with the juvenile court system, or those who have simply fallen through the cracks in the school system. The goal of the program is to identify youths who are going to have a rough or turbulent transition to adulthood and offer positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives. The focus is slightly different at each level but the goal remains the same; empower the young person to make positive changes in his/her life. October 2014 is our projected start date for our program, and it will run throughout the 2014-2015 school year until the end of May.

We will provide weekend activities every other weekend to keep our youth active and busy away from the streets and boredom. Our organization has set our to prove that underprivileged children can and do succeed.
