Learn. Teach. Inspire. Breakthrough Greater Boston (BTGB) is transforming urban education for students and teachers. Through six years of intensive, tuition-free, out of school time programming, Breakthrough changes students' academic trajectories and supports them along the path to four-year college. Simultaneously, BTGB builds the next generation of teachers through competitive recruitment, research-based training, and coaching from master teachers. At Breakthrough, students and teachers and closing the achievement gap one breakthrough at a time. For the last three years, 100% of BTGB seniors have matriculated to four-year college. Over 70% of Breakthrough teachers pursue careers in education after interning at BTGB. BTGB is an affiliate site of the Breakthrough Collaborative: http://www.breakthroughcollaborative.org
Middle School Program: Breakthrough Greater Boston’s acclaimed middle school program is a fun, rigorous, year-round academic program with three components, a summer program, a school-year program, and year-round advocacy. Breakthrough Greater Boston recruits in public sixth grade classrooms in Cambridge and Boston. Breakthrough accepts students who are willing to make a six-year commitment to the program, are serious about pursuing the goal of college, and have a demonstrated need. High School Program: Students who complete Breakthrough Greater Boston’s Middle School Program enroll in the High School Program, committing to stay on the path to college and benefitting from BTGB’s support each step of the way. Students remain closely tied to the BTGB community and a college-going peer group they built in middle school. The high school program is made up of three program components: Advocacy, Summer Programming, and the College Access Program. Teacher Training Program: Breakthrough trains high-achieving high school and college students to teach in the summer and school-year sessions as part of its unique students-teaching-students model. With guidance and support from Program Directors and experienced professional Mentor Teachers, college and high-school students shoulder the responsibilities of full-time educators as they implement curricula, plan daily lessons, manage student behavior, and commit their time to helping younger students follow in their footsteps on the road to college.
