In May 2013, we welcomed poet, writer, broadcaster and former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen as our fifth Guest Director, who presided over a record-breaking year. In 2014 we welcome acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter as Brighton Festival Guest Director. Previous Guest Directors have included actress and human rights campaigner Vanessa Redgrave; Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi; renowned visual artist Anish Kapoor; and celebrated musician Brian Eno.
Brighton Fringe runs from 5 May - 4 June in 2017. It is the largest arts festival in England. Find out more at www.brightonfringe.org Brighton Fringe is the largest arts festival in England and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world and what makes it exceptional is that it is set in an iconic city with unique cultural heritage. It sets out to stimulate, educate and entertain a wide audience by providing a showcase for diverse art forms. It takes place for 4 weeks every May taking in two bank holidays and the summer half-term week. Brighton Fringe has grown out of and is inspired by home-grown creativity: more than 50% of events are put on by artistic companies based in Brighton & Hove. In 2016, it had 932 individual events, more than 200 free events, 4,256 performances at 170 venues. It is also a completely open access festival, which means anyone can put on an event and be included in the brochure and website listings on payment of a fee. By definition, Brighton Fringe can include any art form. No artistic judgement or selection criteria are imposed on participants, enabling the development of both new and established work to attract fresh audiences, press and promoters.
