The Bristol Theatre Company is a 501C3 that was founded in 1983 as The Bristol High School Alumni Theatre Company. The new Company’s first show, FUNNY GIRL, was performed at The Bristol High School Auditorium in the summer of 1983. The Company’s second season featured a performance of ANYTHING GOES, again at Bristol High School. In 1985, the name of the Company was changed to The Bristol Summer Theatre Company. That year, the show was an original cabaret – BACKSTAGE-A MUSICAL REVIEW – and was staged at St. Elizabeth’s Church Social Room. “The Barn” at Roger Williams College opened in 1986 and, as a result of an agreement between the College and the Theatre Company [represented by Chairman, David Driver, and Board Member, George Olear] it became the summer “home” of The Bristol Summer Theatre Company. The Company premiered the first non-college related show at The Barn, DAMES AT SEA, in August. In 1987, the Company’s first non-musical production, SEVEN KEYS TO BALPATE, was performed at The Barn. Due to a lack of resources, no summer show was produced in 1988, but an adaption of Dylan Thomas’ A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS IN WALES was performed at The Barn in December. In the spring of 1989, the Company formally changed its name to The Bristol Theatre Company [BTC]. In August, BTC produced OLIVER! – the first time the Company used “thrust” staging at the Barn [whereby the audience appears on three sides of the actors]. From then until 2006, BTC produced a show every August at The Barn – later The Roger Williams University Performing Arts Center. A short list of shows includes ON THE RAZZLE, CAMELOT, HEAVEN CAN WAIT, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, FORUM, JOSEPH AND AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT [produced again in 2007], CABARET, KISS ME KATE. In 2006, due the size of the cast and the need for a proscenium stage, BTC produced CATS at Mount Hope High School. 2007 found BTC back at RWU with another production of JOSEPH. That was followed by a two-actor show, LOVE LETTERS, in February of 2008, and the summer production was WILLIE WONKA, JR. A non-musical, FOOLS, was performed in 2009, and then, in 2010, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, JR. In 2011, because of the installation of a new roof at the RWU Performing Arts Center, ANNIE JR. was performed at Mount Hope High School. In 2012, due to the possibility that the University Theatre Department may be doing something in early August, BTC went back to the High School for a production of CHILDREN OF EDEN. Bristol Theatre Company was then notified by Roger Williams that due to the popularity of their theatre arts and dance programs they would be expanding into the weekends formerly used by BTC. Roger Williams remains an avid supporter of Bristol Theatre Company. In December of 2012 BTC performed its first annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL – A PLAY WITH MUSIC, the weekend before Christmas, at Linden Place. Most recently THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE was performed at Kickimuit Middle School this past May. This year we also held three fundraiser cabarets; in February, SWEET INDULGENCE at Linden Place, in June DISNEY UNDER THE STARS at Blithewold and in October, FROM BACK TO THE FUTURE – A COMPILATION OF BROADWAY HITS at Franklin Court. In August of 2013 Bristol Theatre Company produced BEAUTY AND THE BEAST JR. to much acclaim at Mount Hope High School. Besides Linden Place and Blithewold, Bristol Theatre Company has also collaborated with the Bristol Rotary and assisted with backstage and technical assistance for local dance troupes and organizations. An original production, THE FIRST CRECHE, was staged at Linden Place [complete with lambs and goats in the courtyard!].
