Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness first identified in the Middle East in 2012. The virus impacts the respiratory system and breathing apparatus and is spread through ill individuals through close contact. The current outbreak in South Korea (183 cases) is the largest outbreak outside of the Middle East and brings the world total to around 1,200. Although MERS is a serious health threat to those who acquire it the extension into the wider community is very limited at this point. Given the current pattern of transmission of the disease, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is not currently recommending travel or trade restrictions in relation to MERS. As always Bupa Global advises customers to check local government advice regarding travel, avoid unnecessary use of hospitals particularly in countries where reported cases of MERS are concentrated and follow basic hand hygiene at all times. We continue to monitor the situation and are in contact with our services on the ground in order to fully understand the situation as it evolves. As of now travel into Nepal is not recommended. Infrastructure including medical services are seriously constrained. Our thoughts are with all those affected and their families and to this end Bupa made a donation to the Disaster Emergencies Committee, which brings together 13 leading UK aid charities raising money to reach those in need quickly.
