Cafe Berlin has been serving traditional cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three joined townhouses whose front yards serve as patios for outdoor dining in warm weather. The interior features a small bar and two prettily decorated dining rooms. Walking distance from Union Station and the Capitol, it draws politicians, congressional staffers, and tourists as well as a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The chefs at Cafe Berlin are German, as are the owners, so the traditional dishes are authentically prepared but with a lighter touch. Changing seasonal menus feature fresh asparagus in the spring, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest, and wild game in the winter. Desserts are made in-house, and the extensive repertoire includes apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines as well as cocktails. Strudels are very popular as desserts in German cuisine. The word "strudel" is from Middle High German and means "eddy" or "whirlpool." These layered pastries with sweet fillings are often dusted with powdered sugar. The most popular type in Germany, apfelstrudel, is filled with apples.

Did you know that the hazelnut has been an important staple of German cuisine for literally thousands of years? The nuts were dense in calories and thus made a great addition to early Germanic foods. In addition, they could easily be stored and consumed over the long winter months.
In German cuisine, bretzel are soft (white) pretzels made of flour, yeast, and salt. In Germany, you can find them in almost every bakery or in the street sold by a vendor. They are served alone, sliced, buttered, or with sliced meats and cheese.
Did you know that much of the Germanic peoples’ early diet was based on wild game and domesticated cattle? An abundance of water from snowmelt coming off the Alps made the region ideal for grazing animals such as cattle and goats.
German food tends to be hearty, filling, and nutritious. Meats and starch, like potatoes and noodles, form the basis for many dishes, along with vegetables like carrots, turnips, and asparagus. German food is perfect for when you want something that sticks to the ribs.
