Did you know that coffee originated in the Ethiopian province of Keffa? In Keffa, the coffee grows wild. This is the coffee we serve at Cafe Merkama. How did we come to have this original, organic wild coffee, here in my humble cafe? The story goes... A man came to Australia as a refugee. After spending many years here, he returned to Ethiopia at a time when he felt safe enough. When there, he bought land in the Keffa province, where he planted the original wild coffee for commercial use. Of course he was eager to introduce this original, wild, rich, organic Ethiopian grown coffee to his new home, Australia. My brother, Abdi is currently the sole importer of the original organic grown coffee to Australia. He sends the raw beans to a roaster who roasts it to the highest Ethiopian standards, then it is packaged with his label, KONJO. We serve this very coffee at Merkama Cafe right here in Ballarat. I also prepare the raw beans in the traditional style Ethiopian manner of drinking and sharing coffee. Cafe Merkama hasn't promoted its wonderful coffee as we have been learning the Italian way to make coffee. Guess what?! We have it perfected. If you'd like to start your day with coffee you know is the original, organically grown bean - drop in to our little piece of Ethiopia in Doveton street Ballarat. We intend to start sending these amazing original raw beans to locally owned Charisma Coffee roasters and will package them with the MERKAMA logo, for you to purchase for your home coffee machines. I am excited. This is a passion of mine! To eat and drink the original foods, before they were tainted with genetic modification, pesticides and packaging. Watch this space to learn when you can get your own original beans from Merkama. (KONJO means beautiful in The Ethiopian national language, Amharic and MERKAMA means beautiful in my ethnic language Guregay.)
