Description
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts is located on the campus of the University of British Columbia near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is situated within the natural landscape of the campus and is surrounded by evergreens and rhododendrons. This state of the art performing arts venue holds the 1,200-seat Chan Shun Concert Hall, the flexible-seating Telus Studio Theatre, the 160-seat Royal Bank Cinema, the Great Performers Lounge, and a glass lobby. Completed in 1997, the Chan Centre hosts classes, rehearsals and performances for a variety of the UBC departments of music, film and theatre as well as a diverse, yearly performing arts season that attracts audiences from all over the Lower Mainland.HistoryThe creation of the Chan Centre was made possible by an initial donation from two brothers and businessmen, Tom and Caleb Chan. This was the largest private donation to a cultural institution in Canadian history at the time. The Chan brothers also donated additional funds in order to set up an endowment fund which, through the interest revenue that it generates, supports many arts organizations and diverse performances at the local, national and international level.The Chan brothers are philanthropists, businessmen and Christians. Their father, Chan Shun, worked his way up in the business world, from sewing in a shirt factory to eventually becoming the head of the Crocodile shirt company. His sons were strongly influenced by his morals and generosity and in the 1980s, after immigrating to Canada, they decided to give back to their new country by helping to build an educational arts facility at UBC. They approached president David Strangway (president of UBC from 1985–1997) and made the proposal, and soon, the concept for a performing arts centre was in motion.

With the opening of the new West Building in 2009, it now has 466,500 ft² of meeting space. It is owned by the British Columbia Pavilion Corporation, a crown corporation owned by the government of British Columbia.East BuildingThe East Building is located in Canada Place, which it shares with a cruise ship terminal, and the Pan Pacific hotel. It has 133,000 ft² (12,400 m²) of space, including a 91,205 ft² (8,500 m²) column-free, dividable exhibition hall, 20 meeting rooms, and a ballroom.The East building served as the Main Press Centre for the 2010 Winter Olympics.West BuildingThe West Building is directly adjacent to Canada Place and consists of of convention space, of retail space along a public waterfront promenade, and 440 parking stalls. Surrounding the building are of walkways, bikeways, public open space and plazas, for a total project area of of land and over water. The project also supplies infrastructure for future water based developments including an expanded marina, a float plane terminal, and water-based retail opportunities. The design architect for the expansion is LMN Architects of Seattle, in association with Vancouver firms MCM Architects and DA Architects + Planners. Morrison Hershfield ensured quality assurance and conducted enhanced field review during construction of all building envelope components including innovative curtain wall glazing and green roof. On February 9, 2010 the building was certified LEED Platinum by the Canada Green Building Council.
