WHAT: Checkit is a new proofreading service for students. Proofreading is when a document or piece of written work is checked by an external party for errors. These mistakes may include spelling, grammar or matters of accuracy. It may simply be judging how the text ‘flows’ or assessing its level of intelligibility. Proofreaders do not necessarily correct these errors but merely record them and point them out to the author for correction. Proofreading is known to drastically lessen the chance of mistakes in language use, and hence increase the chance of getting a better grade. WHY: We believe in equality. Everything we do is aimed at creating a fairer education for students. Hence, we firmly believe that everyone should be assessed on their individual subject ability, and not on the painstaking elements of their English language. Whether you are a college student or an undergraduate at university, academic assignments are often the key to your success, Checkit was created to give you a reliable platform for good-practice proofreading, so that you can focus on what really matters for your subject. HOW: Checkit will provide two types of service: 1) an online feedback service where students send in a draft essay and have their essay returned with any mistakes (as outlined in ‘what’ section above) pointed out and with suggestions for improvement provided; 2) a service for students to sit down for half hour sessions with our experts and go through English mistakes to understand improvements in greater depth.
