A New York Times editorial (http://www.toledoblade.com/Economy/2016/03/01/Toledo-4th-in-rankings-of-economic-distress.html) recently ranked Toledo the 4th most distressed city in the nation. One in five Toledo residents still live at or below the poverty line. Forty-seven percent of adults either aren’t working or have full- or part-time jobs that don’t pay a livable wage. Since Cherry Street’s doors remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, they shoulder the burden every waking—and non-waking—hour. “The demand for emergency food, shelter and compassionate care haven’t gone away,” Rogers says. “These men, women and children who are struggling to survive aren’t always visible. It can be easy to forget to help. But the reality is a dramatic need for anyone in the community with the means to give what they can.” Rogers tells it like it is. But his heart is focused on lifting people on the fringes of society onto a stable, secure and successful path forward. “We don’t use labels at Cherry Street,” Rogers adds. “These are real people with real families and real skills to share with the community. But for a variety of reasons, and many that would surprise you, they need someone to care and invest in who they are. And our entire community will be the better for it.” Each year, Cherry Street undergoes voluntary audits, carefully examining how to best utilize all of their resources to provide the highest quality of service for guests. They run a tight ship. But even the most efficient service organizations can spring a leak when the water gushing in is too great. Every day as people leave the mission to return home, our revolving door continues to turn with new people at our door step.

Get to know Toledo's body positive pin-up community this Saturday during Miss Fabulous Flora 2016, featuring local performers like Stella Swoon and Ruby Jade of the T-Town Tassels. Not only will this pageant support the performers, but it will also help local women through donations collected to benefit The Sparrows' Nest Ministries, Inc, a women's shelter provided through the Cherry Street Mission Ministries.

State Award of $1 Million to Feed Lucas County Children and Cherry Street Mission Ministries to expand our outreach to hungry children and adults in NW Ohio. A press conference was held on the first floor of One Government Center to announce the awarding of a $1 million dollar grant from the state of Ohio to construct a modern kitchen which will serve both organizations, 24 hours per day, as FLCC seeks to feed more hungry children, and Cherry Street Mission feeds additional adults. Speaking at the announcement was FLCC Board Chair Carty Finkbeiner and CEO Patrick Howard, and Cherry Street Mission President and CEO Dan Rogers, State Senators Randy Gardner and Edna Brown, Mayor Paul Hicks-Hudson and County Commissioners Peter Gerken and Tina Skeldon-Wozniak. The site of the newly constructed kitchen will be The Center for Life Revitalization (formerly Macomber).
