Description

The U.S. city of El Paso, Texas was at one time home to a Chinatown that existed in the area that is now occupied by the Paso del Norte Hotel and in the parking lot of the historic Cortez Hotel between the years of 1881 and 1915 along Oregon Street (currently Overland and Paisano). According to historical documents, the Chinatown had many Chinese laundries and was a Chinatown that was the confluence of the Mexican, American, and Chinese cultures.HistoryIn 1983, an archaeological dig was done to further study the Chinese culture that existed in the city of El Paso, as little is known about the Chinese where many records were lost in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and many non-Chinese records tended to be inaccurate. According to the El Paso Museum of History, "... the earliest immigrants worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad laying track going east from California." In the 1880s, El Paso was called the Chinese Mecca of the Southwest.See also Plaza Hotel (El Paso, Texas)
