Provide victims of major disasters in the U.S. with food, hygiene items, new clothing, and cleaning supplies, paid for by Church of Christ members. The Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort organization began operations in 1990 when several Elders from different Church of Christ congregations in the Nashville area got together at a mens breakfast to discuss the idea of helping victims of natural disasters with their immediate needs as we are instructed in God's Word, offering members of a local Church of Christ the opportunity to touch the lives of disaster victims in their community and spread the Gospel. Since 1991, this non-profit organization has distributed emergency food and supplies to tens of thousands of disaster victims in 47 states. For legal reasons we incorporated in 1994, and a 48,500 sq. ft. warehouse was purchased so we could organize and prepackage items so they are ready to be distributed to those afflicted by the disaster. God has blessed us greatly over the years with support, allowing us to add additional space over the years. Our latest addition, completed in 2012, is a 35,000 sq ft warehouse, that houses a 5,000 sq ft freezer. Our total facility, now 87,860 sq. ft., is debt free. Throughout this organizations history, we have shipped approximately $135 million worth of food, cleaning supplies, clothing, beds, furniture, and appliances to disaster victims in need, due to severe storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, earthquakes, and the attack of the twin towers on 9/11. In 2005, shipments worth a record $16.3 million of supplies was sent to victims of natural disasters, the year Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast. In 2012 more than $6.5 million worth of supplies was shipped.

Description

Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., monitors all media avenues watching for major natural disasters in the United States that have displaced victims from their homes. When we have confirmation of a natural disaster, we begin calling Church of Christ congregations in the area of the disaster, along with other local agencies to find out the extent of the damage. We ask the local Church of Christ congregation if they are willing to receive a truckload of prepackaged, ready to distribute supplies. If the local church is willing to go to work to help those in need, and to build relationships with the victims of the disaster, we send the supplies. Our long term goal is to bring the lost to Christ. In areas where a Church of Christ is not located, we contact nearby congregations, to see if they would be willing to work to distribute the supplies we provide in another community. Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort stands prepared with a warehouse of supplies, packed, ready to load on a truck and have on the road within hours. We do not send or coordinate volunteers to do the work, we only send supplies. Initially we send prepacked family food boxes, personal care boxes, infant care boxes, cleaning buckets, along with pallets of: bottled water, diapers, laundry detergent, bleach, new clothing and shoes, along with bundles of mops, rakes, shovels, and brooms, and other cleaning supplies. We turn these supplies over to the leadership of the local Church of Christ we are working with, for them to distribute to all disaster victims. We are a source of supplies for the local congregation to go to work, doing what the Lord told His church to do.. Later on, when people are getting back into their homes or a place to live, we can purchase new beds, appliances, and other household furniture from vendors, and have it shipped directly from the manufacturer to the congregation working with victims. The Beds, appliances and furniture are for qualified victims that did not have insurance to cover the items lost, with a family income of $30,000 or less. We limit a family to one room of furniture, one appliance (possibly two), beds to sleep 4 people. We want to be good stewards of the Lords money we receive from those that support us. We ask local members to visit victims homes, to verify these items are requested by and provided to only disaster victims, where these items were lost due to the disaster. To be a first responder to natural disasters within the United States, ready to send shipments of food, water, new clothing, cleaning supplies and other items, as soon as possible to the leadership of a Church of Christ in the vicinity of the disaster. Hoping for as many Christians as possible to become involved in distributing these goods to all victims of the disaster in the community, regardless of their race, sex, religion, or background. This work will provide an opportunity to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost.
