Description

Consultation commenced in earnest on February 5, 1990 when an open letter was sent to Forest Officers soliciting input into the idea of forming a new association. Subsequently, the Alberta Forest Technologists Association (AFTA) was incorporated on December 4, 1992, under the Societies Act. Over time, inter-organizational cooperation developed between AFTA and the Alberta Registered Professional Foresters Association (ARPFA). As a result of the positive working relationships that developed, both groups were unified under one Act with a separate association for technologists. This relationship was formalized when the Regulated Forestry Profession Act received Royal Assent in 1999. Once the Act was in place, the two associations -- AFTA and ARPFA --formed a joint Policy, Act, Regulation, and Bylaw Committee (PARB). The objective of the PARB was to establish the processes and rules by which both associations and their memberships would be regulated. Between September 18 and October 3, 2001 consultation sessions were held across Alberta to solicit feedback on the regulations. Approval of the regulations was preceded by a dramatic increase in the registration rates of forest technologists in AFTA. At the March 2, 2001 Annual General Meeting Don Podlubny presided over an assembly of 154 voting members and an Association of over 300 active members. On April 25, 2002 the Regulated Forestry Profession Act was proclaimed and an Order in Council was signed by Lois Hole, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The creation of the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists was more than a mere series of organizational activities. The new College signalled a change in the forest industry in Alberta and a commitment towards both scientific and sustainable forest management practices. The commitment of founding members along with the dedication of the College’s Champion Ty Lund, Minister of Environmental Protection, made the idea of a College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists a reality. Those who follow the work of our founding members and supporters acknowledge the commitment and hard work of these Albertans in their shared mission to promote the professional management of all forested land in the province.
