Who we are… Community Care, St. Catharines & Thorold has been meeting the needs of the less advantaged in our community since 1919. The fundamental principles on which the agency was founded have not changed. Programs range from food and shelter security to emergency services and supports that lead to the independence clients strive to achieve. Although most programs are delivered within the communities of St. Catharines & Thorold, the Trustee and Niagara Nutrition Partners Programs are delivered on a regional basis. Those we serve… Community Care: •Community Care is assisting an average of 1850 households per month in St. Catharines and Thorold. 53% will be children. •New clients registering are on the increase. •We are distributing approximately 4,000 pounds of food daily, PER DAY, 5 days a week. The value applied would be approximately $10,000 per day. •Food is distributed on a bi-monthly basis however no request is denied and emergency bags are provided as needed. Housing Help: •In 2012, the Housing Help Centre worked with 1,155 youth, 16 to 24 years of age, who were either homeless or at imminent risk of being homeless. 60% were female. •In 2012, 11,248 people came through the doors of Housing Help, without appointments, and 13,367 phone calls were received. Assistance included housing/homelessness issues, landlord/tenant concerns, income application processes, and utility, identification, and communication assistance-including navigating vital systems …amongst other struggles. We compassionately provide vital services and assistance to individuals and families that help bridge and meet their basic needs as they continue their journey to self-sufficiency. ...because our Community Cares...

General Info

How we respond… FOOD SECURITY... FOOD Bank: Through our St. Catharines and Thorold locations we acquire and distribute food to individuals and families facing hardships in St. Catharines and Thorold. Every client served by Community Care must be assessed for need according to LICO Poverty Lines (Low Income Cut Off). Once registered, clients may access food, clothing and household goods every other month or six times per year however no emergency is denied. Savoury Samples: Samples are offered each Thursday morning, with clients tasting a recipe that is both nutritious and easy to prepare, utilizing food bank items and lovingly prepared by volunteers. Everything is then provided to the client to replicate the recipe at home. Community Gardens: Thirty garden plots located at Torosian Park in St. Catharines are supported in partnership with Niagara Regional Housing and the City of St. Catharines. Clients have the ability, and support, to grow their own produce. Clothing & Household Goods: Gently used clothing and small household goods are distributed on a bimonthly basis to registered clients. Referrals to access larger furnishings are available. HOUSING SECURITY... Housing Supports: Housing Help assists those who are homeless, at risk of being homeless, receiving government assistance, underemployed, physically and/or mentally challenged, those facing eviction, those leaving institutions, or those in need of community support. Housing Help assists with access to affordable housing, assistance with the completion of rental applications and documents, landlord disputes, referrals to emergency shelter, trusteeships, money management, utility assistance, Talk2One telephone services, access to weekly Health Bus health care services and referrals to other local applicable agencies or services. Utility Assistance: Distribution of funding acquired through assorted Energy Assistance Programs as well as liaising with utility providers to ensure utilities, including lights and heat, are maintained. Trusteeship Program: Money management and direct distribution of support funds are provided to secure housing and other related costs e.g. utilities. This is a Regional Program. Youth Trusteeship Program: Students up to 24 years of age are assisted with budgeting of funds and advocacy for youth with landlords, social services and schools. Youth under the age of 18 must have a trustee and attend school to receive assistance. This is a Regional Program.
