Coffee - the timeless and original social drink Wine - the quintessential stimulator of love and conversation Art - the subject of social conversations inspiring love, hate, debate, controversy, passion and emotion throughout the entire history of human existence Montparnasse Paris at the turn of the 19th Century became famously referred to as les Années Folles (the Crazy Years), when it was the heart of intellectual and artistic life in Paris. Virtually penniless painters, sculptors, writers, poets and composers came from around the world to thrive in the creative atmosphere and for the cheap rent at artist communes such as La Ruche. Living without running water, in damp, unheated "studios", seldom free of rats, many sold their works for a few francs just to buy food. But for the price of a cup of coffee, these now immortal icons of art could secure a seat in a warm cafe or coffee house, and with little knowledge of the power they had in shaping modern art and it’s acceptance as we know it today. They spent hours discussing, debating, sketching and stretching the boundaries of currently accepted, contemporary art. Montparnasse was a community where creativity was embraced with all its oddities, each new arrival welcomed unreservedly by its existing members. Artists and writers would mull over ideas and discuss politics and art often until they fell asleep at the table. Sometimes, proprietors even accepted drawings and sketches in payment for their drinks. This is the inspiration for our little Gallery and Coffee House. We welcome all - all artists, all writers, all conversationalists...all everyone. Sit, drink, look, contemplate, relate, discuss and someday you may be the legend spoken of and inspired by in a coffee house far and away in the future.
