Mobile Volunteer Opportunities for Attorneys & Non-Attorneys Fort Sill Detention Center in Lawton, OK (3 hour drive) Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City (CCOKC) has been approved to start conducting Know Your Rights Legal Presentations (KYRs) and individual legal consultations (Consultations or Screenings) for the 1200 children at the Fort Sill Detention Center in Lawton, Oklahoma (“Project”), beginning on Monday July 7, 2014. CCOKC has established a website, http://helpkids.catholiccharitiesok.org/, where the volunteer positions are listed. If interested, please complete the CCOKC volunteer application form and it will be quickly processed. Please be aware that the information requested in the application is needed to perform a background check because the center is located on a military base. Volunteers will be reimbursed for tolls, mileage and given a per diem food allowance. As you will see on the site, you do not have to be a lawyer to help us at Fort Sill with this project. We can train you to be an effective advocate for these kids. We need as many bilingual speakers as possible. Most of these kids with whom you will directly interact are from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. The KYRs and consultations for the children are required by Federal Immigration Law and regulations. More importantly those KYRs and Consultations are essential because each child is now in removal (deportation) proceedings and needs to understand how the immigration system works, what legal issues are facing them, and what are their rights in those legal proceedings. Email Richard Klinge at rklinge@catholiccharitiesok.org or call 405-200-9867 (cell) if you have questions.

CLE for Attorneys - "Special Immigrant Juvenile Status ("SIJS") Training" Through Human Rights Initiative ("HRI") An immigrant child who has been the victim of neglect, abuse, or abandonment may be eligible to receive Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. HRI recruits pro bono attorneys to represent the child before the local family court, to assist the necessary proceedings to establish if the child has been abused, abandoned, or neglected, and declared dependent upon the court. Once this is established, the order is taken to the immigration court for further proceedings, where a pro bono attorney is needed to represent the child in removal proceedings and seeking adjustment of status with the Citizenship and Immigration Services. Join HRI for one of the following SIJS CLE trainings: Thursday July 31st 12-1 pm at HRI's offices, 2801 Swiss Ave, Dallas, TX 75204. OR Friday, August 1st 12-1 pm at Perkins Coie, LLP, 500 North Akard, Suite 3300, Dallas, TX 75201. Trainings will be presented by HRI's Women & Children's Program attorney, Melissa Weaver. Please RSVP to Elisabeth Hagberg at ehagberg@hrionline.org. These trainings will count for 1 MCLE credit with 0.25 ethics credits.

This information session is open to attorneys and non-attorneys. You do not have to be a member of the DHBA or DBA to attend. Unaccompanied Refugee Minors & Humanitarian Crisis at the Border: What’s Going On and What Can Attorneys Do? Given the crisis created by the influx of over 52,000 children from Central America entering the U.S. at our southern border, the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association (“DHBA”) created the Unaccompanied Minors Action Committee (“UMAC”) in mid-June 2014 in an effort to address the issue. This one-hour presentation will include background information about the migration, the process that the children go through once they cross the border, the federal agencies involved, the legal proceedings that the children face, and the legal relief that may apply under current federal laws. In addition, learn what the Dallas legal community is doing to address, in a non-partisan fashion, the legal and humanitarian issues surrounding this situation and what DHBA is doing to spearhead the local bar associations’ efforts to uphold the system of justice and coordinate volunteers who wish to assist in providing these children basic civil legal services. DHBA leaders will present and be available for questions about the UMAC. Seating may be limited. When: July 24 at 12 - 1pm OR July 30 at 6 - 7 pm Where: Belo Mansion, 2101 Ross Ave., Dallas, TX 75201 RSVP: Email Alicia Hernandez at ahernandez@dallasbar.org if you plan to attend. Lunch will be available for purchase at the July 24th presentation. Parking is available beneath the Belo Mansion Pavilion. No CLE credit is provided for this presentation.
