Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, an organization of college-educated women, has a two-fold purpose. It is committed to the constructive development of its members, and its members are actively engaged in public service with a primary focus on the Black community. In 1932, under the national presidency of Gladys B. Shepperd, eight wonderful Lexington, Kentucky, women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. chartered the first alumnae chapter in Kentucky, Chi Sigma. Due to nomenclature changes in the sorority, the chapter’s name later became Lexington (KY) Alumnae Chapter. The chapter currently has many active members with over 250 area-wide members. (Note: Since the chapter membership is not a static number, it might be best not to give an exact number.) Since the birth of this chapter, its members have been a viable force in the community. They have initiated and participated in numerous public service projects, such as food drives, the sorority's own Debutante Scholarship Ball, health initiatives, Delta Academy, social action activities, adopting Christmas families, and various health walks. The goal of the Lexington (KY) Alumnae Chapter is to help make a difference in the lives of others. Lexington (KY) Alumnae Chapter, Kentucky's First Alumnae Chapter
