The Derby City Bears is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the advocacy of the Bear community in the greater Louisville area. What’s a bear? Traditionally bears are defined as hefty, hairy, and friendly gay men. The Derby City Bears saw the need to support this group within gay community and has answered the call. Our advocacy comes from people of all genders, shapes, and sizes. At the end of the day, all we have is each other, and the Derby City Bears recognize this and strategically strive to be a beacon of inclusiveness, positivity, and plain fun within the LGBTQIA community.

Support for people to live positive. Founded in 1992 by eight friends, four of whom were Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, House of Ruth was incorporated to meet the local service needs of women and children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. The service population has since expanded to include men living with HIV/AIDS, and the lives of more than 1,100 people, including nearly 300 children, and 700 households each year.
